Most adults face some challenges when it comes to aging, whether it be finding the right health care, maintaining one’s mobility, or choosing a senior living community. For Hispanic and Latinx adults living in the United States, these challenges may be exacerbated.

Approximately 10.8 million Hispanics don’t have adequate health care insurance, and more than 50 percent of those who are employed don’t have access to paid sick leave, which makes it harder to maintain one’s health. And when it comes to senior living and senior care, studies have shown that Hispanic seniors are more likely to reside in nursing homes that have inadequate care due to racial and ethnic differences.

But, nursing homes aren’t the only option. Assisted living communities provide an alternative senior living option, and some communities offer services and amenities that can make Hispanic and Latinx seniors feel at home. This guide addresses common assisted living concerns of the Hispanic/Latinx community and how to address these issues. It also provides the average cost of assisted living and state and national resources for aging Hispanic adults.

Hispanic Americans and Assisted Living: Common Concerns and Challenges

Low incomes, language barriers, poor job opportunities and a lack of cultural integration make it difficult for many Hispanic Americans to locate quality housing. These issues make home ownership nearly impossible for some, and as a result, senior care must be provided in a family member’s home or within an assisted living community. This, too, can pose a problem, as Hispanic Americans also face challenges in long-term care.

  • Language barriers: Language barriers can lead to poor-quality care. Physicians and caregivers may have a more difficult time understanding their patient’s needs. Individuals faced with language barriers may also neglect to report elder abuse and discrimination.
  • Food choices: Dietary choices affect the health and overall quality of life of individuals. Hispanic Americans may fear their traditional foods won’t be available in assisted living facilities.
  • Religion: Faith and religion plays an important role in the life of most individuals, including those in the Hispanic faith community, where Catholicism is the main religion. For these seniors, a faith-based assisted living community or one that includes Catholicism as part of its offerings is important.
  • Cultural bias: Cultural barriers, especially discrimination toward any race, can negatively affect an individual’s experience and quality of care in a nursing home. Facilities run by other Hispanics or those who hire a diverse workforce are necessary to prevent implicit bias.
  • Locating local services: Latino and Hispanic neighborhoods within a city can be further from quality care than neighborhoods that attract these types of businesses. This can make it hard for Hispanics to locate facilities close to family and friends.
  • Economic barriers: Seniors in the Hispanic community are often low income without the means to pay large care fees. These economic barriers can make it difficult to find a quality care facility.

How To Manage Feelings of Cultural Guilt of When Moving a Loved One to Assisted Living

The Hispanic population places a huge emphasis on the importance of family. As a result, over 40% of seniors within the community live with family members or close by in their own homes. Because parents are seen as strong decision-makers in the Hispanic community, the choice to move a senior family member to an assisted living home can lead to feelings of cultural guilt and frustration, but there are ways to deal with this. Consider the following:

  • Reach out to others for support: Talk to family members or your parent’s physician when dealing with the feeling of guilt. Reaching out provides a different perspective and helps you sort out your feelings.
  • Accept your feelings: Feelings of guilt are normal. Understand that seniors in assisted living communities often have greater flexibility to participate in hobbies and special events due to the increased support, so your loved ones are better off.
  • Research the facility: Do your homework and place your loved one in an assisted living community that caters to their individual needs. You’ll feel less guilty if you know you’re leaving your loved ones in a place they enjoy and can thrive.
  • Consider the alternatives: Consider options other than putting your loved ones into an assisted living community. Choose the best option that keeps them safe, helps them receive the amount of care they deserve and improves their overall quality of life.

How Much Spanish-Speaking Assisted Living Costs and How To Pay

According to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the average monthly cost of care in an assisted living community is $4,500, which is an estimated $54,000 per year. These rates vary greatly depending on the cost of living in the community and the exact location. Another factor is the number of add-on services, which may consist of bathing, meals, medication reminders and housekeeping. The type of housing arrangement also influences costs. The base price typically includes a private or shared room with a private bath, while the cost can increase for one- and two-bedroom apartments or single-family homes. Some communities also charge extra for things like cable TV and Wi-Fi. Assisted living costs are the same for both U.S. citizens and immigrants.

How To Pay for Assisted Living

Like most residential care services, assisted living is costly. While a few options pay for some of the services, assisted living costs are typically covered by personal funds, including the sale of a home, Social Security income, retirement and savings. Other options include:

  • Medicare: Medicare is the federal health insurance program for seniors 65 and older. It covers medically necessary services, including IV therapy, wound care, occupational, speech and physical therapy, and medication administration. However, it doesn’t cover personal care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid is a national insurance program offered to low-income individuals who can’t otherwise afford health insurance. It’s jointly funded by each state and the federal government. Like Medicare, Medicaid doesn’t cover the cost of room and board in an assisted living community, and it usually doesn’t cover the cost of assisted living directly. Most states have waivers that help pay for home and community-based services, like grooming, bathing, toileting and medication reminder. It also covers the cost of medically necessary services, including physician visits and therapy.
  • Long-term care insurance: Long-term care insurance is a comprehensive private insurance policy that pays for senior services as an individual ages. Typical policies cover personal care needs, skilled nursing, therapy and respite care at home and in a residential setting. Policies differ depending on what the individual pays for.

Veterans benefits: Veterans may apply for the Aid and Attendance Housing Benefit, which covers the cost of personal care in an assisted living community. Personal care includes grooming, mobility assistance, toileting, bathing and housekeeping.
