Senior Living Resources for Christian and Catholic Seniors

For many seniors, one of the most difficult aspects of transitioning into assisted living is the fear of losing close connections with longtime friends and neighbors. One thing you definitely don’t want to lose is your church family.

About two-thirds of Americans identify as Christian, including a significant number of older adults, particularly those in the Silent Generation. Unsurprisingly, about three out of four older Christians say that religion is very important in their lives and increases their feelings of peace and well-being, according to surveys from the Pew Research Center.

If you’re considering assisted living, think about all the things you can gain, rather than the few things you may lose. Assisted living facilities provide a comfortable, maintenance-free lifestyle with restaurant-style meals, housekeeping and a long list of amenities, including spiritual care.

For some seniors, joining a community of like-minded peers who share similar values can help with the transition to long-term care. Just as you know when you’ve found the right church, you can be sure when you’ve found the right assisted living facility.

We created this guide to help you better understand what special services Christian senior living offers and where you can find these communities. Below, we explore some of the unique features and services offered at Christian and Catholic senior living communities  and includes some tips to help seniors and their families select a facility and pay for care.

What Is Christian Senior Living and How Is It Different From Standard Senior Living?

Christian senior living communities offer all the basic amenities and services that you expect from conventional long-term care providers, with a variety of extras. Residents can participate in spiritual activities, weekly religious services, one-on-one pastoral care and opportunities to connect with others through Bible studies and intergenerational ministries. All this comes with a warm, family-oriented atmosphere based on age-old teachings and the guiding principles of treating others well and living in gratitude.

The first thing you should know about faith-based senior living facilities is that they welcome residents of all religions and backgrounds. You don’t have to be affiliated with a particular church or denomination, although this may have a bearing on your decision. You’ll never be turned away. These communities can be a godsend for widows, widowers, low-income families and seniors who have nowhere else to turn. Charitable funds ensure that care is always available, even to seniors who have run out of money. That’s Christianity at work. Let’s take a closer look at some of the services offered in these communities.

What Is Offered in Standard Senior Living Communities?

Senior living facilities offer multiple levels of care for residents who are fully independent, as well as those who need help with chronic medical conditions or multiple aspects of daily care. Facilities may provide just one level of care, or they may offer multiple medical and non-medical services under one roof.

Independent Living vs. Assisted Living

Independent living is the most flexible option. It offers age-restricted housing to seniors who want to participate in recreational activities and enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle. Apartments are usually equipped with full kitchens or kitchenettes that allow residents to cook their own meals. Assisted living facilities have similar amenities and hospitality services, but they also offer one-on-one care around the clock and three daily meals for seniors who need extra help getting around.

Memory Care and Skilled Nursing

Seniors who have been diagnosed with certain conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, may require a higher level of supervision known as memory care. Skilled nursing facilities provide around-the-clock medical care just below what a hospital can provide. On the other end of the spectrum, adult day health care programs can offer fitness classes, physical therapy and meals while allowing seniors to return to their homes at the end of the day. These programs are also suitable for individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

The table below provides a summary of the services that are available in senior living communities.

Unique Services and Amenities Provided in Christian Senior Living Communities

Christianity is one of America’s most prevalent religious groups. This can be broken down into many denominations such as Catholicism and Protestantism. Many of these religious groups operate their own senior living communities.

Christian senior living communities offer all the perks of conventional assisted living facilities, along with a few extras. While most senior living facilities offer non-denominational religious services and Bible study groups, you may find that the activities at faith-based communities speak more directly to your belief system. Below are a few of the extra amenities you can expect.

Chapels and Religious Services

Christian retirement communities typically have custom-built chapels featuring pews, stained glass and other authentic details. These facilities are used for weekly religious services. Sermons may be geared to residents of a particular faith, and additional, less formal, options may be available for other denominations or religions. Christian communities also offer counseling and pastoral care, which can be helpful for seniors and their families, especially those on hospice.

Resident Activities and Clubs

Faithful residents enjoy a wide range of recreational activities at Christian senior living communities. Most offer Bible study and prayer groups during the week. You may be able to join the facility’s choir, or you can donate your time to beneficial causes through various ministries. Some church-affiliated facilities have intergenerational activities in partnership with parochial schools and preschools.

Dining Options

Christian senior living communities may offer special diets based on religious beliefs, as well as modifications for health reasons. For example, Catholic communities may provide fish and meatless entrees on Fridays. Adventist retirement homes generally have vegetarian menus. You can also request low-sugar or low-sodium options that work with your diet.

What to Expect From Christian Senior Living

Even among Christian senior living communities, there’s quite a variety of residences to choose from. In general, you can expect these facilities to be close-knit and family oriented. Apart from providing weekly religious services and observing holidays and other traditions, they incorporate spiritual principles into other aspects of their operation. Learn more about some of the differences.

  • Christian senior living communities are often affiliated with churches and religious institutions and generally operate as nonprofits.
  • These communities often operate charitable foundations that accept tax-deductible donations and use endowments to fund resident care and activities.
  • Many faith-based long-term care providers operate continuing-care retirement communities that provide multiple levels of care on one village-style campus.
  • Christian principles create a strong sense of community at these facilities and encourage residents to give back and support one another.
  • While these facilities may cater to residents of a particular denomination, no one is excluded based on their beliefs.
  • Religious assisted living facilities offer a variety of fun recreational activities and outings. Weekly happy hours, blackjack games and casino trips may be included, depending on the facility’s beliefs.

How Much Does Christian Senior Living Cost?

In general, Christian assisted living facilities offer competitive amenities and services, so their rates are in line with most secular, for-profit locations. Rates vary significantly by the local area and the facility’s target market. Some faith-based organizations focus on affordable senior housing and personal care, while others offer a more luxurious lifestyle. However, the majority of facilities cater to a midrange market to accommodate a wider clientele.

Senior living prices can vary dramatically depending on the level of care you need. For example, independent living, which doesn’t include one-on-one personal care, costs about 35% less than assisted living. If you need extra supervision or medical monitoring, you could pay much more for memory care or skilled nursing. To give you a more accurate look at expected costs, we’ve included some information from Genworth Financial’s 2021 Cost of Care Survey, which tracks long-term care costs nationwide.

  • Adult Day Health Care: $1,690
  • Independent Living: $2,925
  • Assisted Living: $4,500
  • Nursing Homes: $7,908
  • Memory Care: $5,625
  • In-Home Care: $4,957

If you want social interaction and help with meals, you can sign up for an adult day health care program for approximately $1,690 per month. Residential care costs around $2,925-$4,500 per month for independent or assisted living, while memory care may cost over $5,625 per month. Seniors also have the option of hiring an independent personal care aide, whether they live at home or in a retirement community. This option costs an average of $5,000 per month or $27 per hour. However, care costs may vary, depending on the location of the facility and the services and amenities offered.

The facility’s pricing structure will also affect how much you pay for care. It’s common for facilities to bill for room plus care, or they may offer all-inclusive rates based on the level of assistance you need. Facilities that bill for services a la carte sometimes offer a credit system that lets you spend money on the services you need most.

Factors That Affect Long-Term Care Pricing

Long-term care costs vary depending on a variety of factors, but religious affiliation usually isn’t one of them. Some things that may affect how much you pay for assisted living include:

  • Location
  • Cost of living
  • Labor availability
  • Floor plan or apartment style
  • Meal options
  • Medical needs
  • Amenities

Tips for Finding a Christian Senior Living Community

If you’re looking for a faith-based senior living community, the good news is that there are probably numerous options in your area. However, this can make it more difficult to decide which option best fits your needs. Conducting research and visiting these facilities in person is an important part of the process. You probably tried several churches before you found the right congregation, and it can be the same way with long-term care. Following these tips can help you and your family find a senior living community that fits your needs:

  • Schedule a tour. If you’re aware of a Christian assisted living facility in your community, schedule a tour with a friend or relative. Most facilities will show you around, introduce you to some of the residents and let you try a meal on the house.
  • Ask your pastor or church group for recommendations. Your church may already be donating to a local long-term care facility that’s affiliated with an interfaith ministry. Religious organizations may also be able to provide recommendations about local and regional facilities.
  • Ask friends or relatives for recommendations. You may already know someone who’s in long-term care and enjoys where they’re living. Acquaintances may also have family who work in the industry, or they may be able to provide informed advice based on their experiences.
  • Conduct an online search. Online searches are a great way to locate facilities in your area. Long-term care sites, such as, provide detailed information about local communities, and they offer free long-term care consultations with a trained family adviser.
  • Read Reviews. Take time to check online reviews to see what residents and their loved ones are saying about these facilities. Look for recent comments that mention the staff, management, layout, amenities, activities and food.

What to Look for When Choosing a Christian Senior Living Community

There are so many things to consider when comparing senior living facilities that can make it difficult to know where to start. In addition to considering practical items, such as amenities and pricing, you’ll need to decide which resources are most important to you. For example, you may prefer a facility that offers Catholic mass during the week, or you may  prefer a community that offers a weekly non-denominational service. Here are a few general things to consider that apply to all facilities, regardless of religious affiliation:

  • Staffing policies
  • Nurse availability
  • Medical services
  • Weekly activities
  • Apartment floor plans
  • Levels of care
  • Accommodations for pets
  • Transportation
  • On-site services
  • Pricing structure

Religious Amenities and Services

Certain amenities and activities may have a greater importance to you, depending on your personal beliefs. Most faith-based senior living communities offer the following additions, but if something is a must-have for you, make sure to ask in advance.

  • Amenities, including a chapel
  • Access to an on-site chaplain
  • Scheduled religious services
  • Clubs, such as choirs and Bible study groups
  • Ministry-related volunteer opportunities
  • Religious holiday celebrations
  • Compliant dining options
  • Transportation for off-site religious services

Financial Resources for Christian Senior Living

With a median cost of over $4,000 per month, many seniors need help paying for assisted living. If you have limited income or assets, you may be able to tap into programs offered by Medicaid or your local Area Agency on Aging. You may also be able to purchase long-term care insurance to help with these expenses.

For your convenience, most senior living facilities offer financial consultations to help you estimate your costs, identify payment options and apply for assistance if needed. If you run low on funds in the future, your facility can help you apply for Medicaid.

Since many faith-based senior living communities are operated by non-profit organizations, they can accept donations and often operate charitable foundations. Resources from endowment funds may be available to help you through short-term difficulties, and they ensure you can remain in the facility, even if you’re unable to pay.
